sand

With less than two weeks to go to my show, I've been practising my sand painting. It's seems a little crazy to be doing this live throughout the show when I've never done it before. But it seems to fit with the theme of Wild Life, I wanted something that was emergent, that I didn't have total control over.

Sometimes I'm amazed and astounded by what come out, but I wonder how my responses will be affected when I'm doing this as a performance...

And two paintings that I've finally finished off...

they never go away

Indian images and paintings of 'gods' often baffle those from outside the Indian tradition, but God and gods in India are, from one perspective, simply personifications of the natural world, across all levels of scale. They map on to human attributes and potentials, articulating a fractal view of humanity which nestles the smallest cell of the human body into the vast space of a cosmic ocean that stretches across space and time.

My painting and my studies of Indian Art and Philosophy have been trying to connect up for a long time. It's taking its time. The first images came through in March 2012, and then I began trying to work it out with my mind. That failed, so I gave up and just kept painting.

new things in 'natural forms'

I'm busy reviewing past work and dealing with logistics for the show in September at the moment, but some new paintings are starting to appear....

The potential of the simple circular form seems to be endless. I keep thinking that I want to move out to jagged lines and other kinds of shape, but the circles don't seem to have ended themselves yet. It's almost as if it doesn't matter what the basis of the repetition/novelty is - with the vastness of colour and the possibilities of differing scale there seem to be an untold number of worlds to explore, just staying limited to one basic shape...

But I am feeling the need to work out from the circles somehow. These strings have appeared - biological threads, viscous connections, sticky strands...
